Thank you Caroline Savage for this simple to follow guide to grant writing. Grant applications can be overwhelming for someone who has never had to write one and this book breaks it down into easy step by step processes with a fantastic checklist of don't forget reminders at the end of each chapter. The writing is clear and concise and easy to follow breaking through some of the textbook speak in the grant applications themselves. I look forward to referring back to relevant chapters as I approach future grant applications.

"There are many tools on the market about writing winning grant applications, but "Grant Writing: A simple, clear and concise guide" is one that is so easy to read, digest and use. It provides relevant and practical tools to use for effective grant writing, as well as giving a framework that creates a long term foundation for approaching successful granting writing. As a grant writer of 15 years, I have picked up tips and ideas to enhance my work, but the guide is also very relevant to people who have never written a grant before. It will walk you through the sometimes overwhelming world of grant writing with easy to follow steps and strategies to develop your skills, and ultimately, win more grants for your organisation. The principles are transferable across all sectors of grant writing, from not for profit agencies in community work, the arts and sporting clubs to business and research grants. I highly recommend this book as a practical, time saving guide to developing your grant writing and invest in your organisation's long term, sustainable future"

I found the format exceptionally easy to follow and simple to read - and particularly found the checklists at the end of each section useful.  As a very new grant writer ( I have just finished co-writing my first grant), your advice was helpful in seeing where I could have responded to criteria in a better way - ie  by using strong positive language as you suggested.

Overall I found the book to be informative and relevant for myself (I work in a not-for-profit organisation without DGR status).

I liked your notes about being realistic about your project matching what the funder is prepared to support, especially in order to keep a good reputation.  And the tip about Google News (about to subscribe now).  I also found your filing system suggestion useful, especially as time (or lack of) is always a stressor!

This is a great guide for writing a grant. Writing a grant is the process of submitting an application for funding from a financial institute. This book takes you step by step through the process from beginning to the final completed process. I would recommend using this guide if you are ready to submit an application and write a grant. Well written and easy to follow.

There is much to love in Grant Writing: A Simple, Clear, and Concise Guide by Caroline Savage. Grant professionals that I know have little time for wading through wordy tomes when looking for advice to punch up their success rate. This guide is exactly what the title says – simple, clear, and concise. I like that it is enough of a basic overview to be helpful to a newcomer to the profession, but that it also includes tips and processes valuable to a seasoned grant writer.

Check lists at the ends of each chapter help you remember the main points. Two parts I find most valuable are 1) the chapter on setting up electronic folders and sub folders for each grant project, and 2) the chapter on creating project timelines. I also appreciate the advice on considering the differences between corporate and foundation audiences.

Because Ms. Savage is writing from an Australian perspective, there are a few phrases and concepts that might be briefly confusing to an American reader, but you can quickly figure it out from the context of the chapter.

I discovered Ms. Savage when I was looking for a list of good, basic grant-writing manuals that I could recommend to new grant writers who often come to me for mentoring and advice. She gave me a copy of the book, but don’t let that suggest any bias in my review. As a 15-year veteran in the profession, I found many tips to use in my own work, and I will definitely recommend it to newcomers.

Grant Writing: A Simple, Clear and Concise Guide by Caroline Savage is just what it states, a clear and concise guide that will help you effectively write grants to get necessary funding. From the initial stages of application to having an actual submission, Savage lays out the terrain perfectly, and just how to traverse it and succeed. She addresses budgets, the project plan and review, how to find grants, and how to do research. At the end of each chapter is a checklist that highlights and goes over some top points that are covered, this is very helpful. In addition, Savage has included some websites that will help you to navigate the world of grant writing. While this is a short guide, it is effective in delivering it's message. This is a helpful and supportive guide that will help improve your grant writing ability and increase your chances of success in gaining funding. Highly recommend.
